Abstract

Purpose

This study presents a situated and context-bound model of electronic media reports by exploring their detailed information practices within the workplace actions. It further investigates the information sources they usually consult for news or story-making process and barriers that hinder them to acquire required information.

Design/methodology/approach

The data were collected through semistructured, face-to-face interviews of electronic media reporters from the top news channels of Pakistan. These reporters had international exposure while having 7–20 years of work experience with different news channels.

Findings

In relation to information practices, the model also highlights the seven steps involved in news-making process of electronic media. Initially inspired from Mckenzie's (2003) model of information practice, which was developed within the everyday life context, this model attempts to see the information practices of electronic media reporters situated at their workplaces and might be seen as an extension of previous works.

Originality/value

This study is a unique attempt to find patterns of information practices situated in their workplace actions. The results of this study would be helpful for librarians and information specialists, who are working in media house libraries for the planning and designing of library services.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to examine the current status of prison libraries, their role, services and collection in Pakistani context. It also attempts to highlight the main problems faced by selected libraries.

Design/methodology/approach

The qualitative research approach was adopted to achieve the study objectives. Data were collected using face-to-face interviews to find out respondents’ views about libraries in prison.

Findings

Findings of the study confirmed that inmates’ library queries are mostly related to the legal matters, and it is quite natural. One of the significant services of the Pakistani prison libraries is to help prisoners in their education. The main role of the library caretaker was to educate and offer rehabilitation programs. Unavailability of library space, lack of professional staff, limited collections, poor budgetary situation and censorship issues are the major challenges that Pakistani prison libraries are facing.

Social implications

The study findings further implicate that open libraries and access to books would promote positivity within society and reduce criminal and immoral acts.

Originality/value

It is the first of its kind and unique study that presents the current situation of prison libraries in the Pakistani context. The study has practical implications for policymakers to give importance to prison libraries in terms of finance, professional staff and the availability of information sources.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore visual artists’ image needs and the obstacles they face in meeting them.

Design/methodology/approach

The visual artists, participating in the study, included painters, graphic designers, textile designers, architects and sculptors who were faculty members in two oldest art institutions of Pakistan. A total of 20 face-to-face interviews representing four participants from each visual artists group were conducted. The textual data were analyzed thematically, using NVIVO 12 software.

Findings

Results showed that under-study visual artists need images mainly for academic purposes (teaching, assignments, etc.) and for professional and research purposes. However, they require images quite often, as a majority of the respondents told that they need images on daily basis.

Social implications

The study findings provide an insight for information science professionals, system designers and image librarians regarding visual artists’ image using behavior.

Originality/value

As the researchers could not find any such study in local context, and a very few globally, therefore, this study may serve as a baseline for further research in this area.

Abstract

Purpose

Winglets play a major role in saving fuel costs because they reduce the lift-induced drag formed at the wingtips. The purpose of this paper is to obtain the best orientation of the winglet for the Office National d’Etudes et de Recherches Aérospatiales (ONERA) M6 wing at Mach number 0.84 in terms of lift to drag ratio.

Design/methodology/approach

A computational fluid dynamics analysis of the wing-winglet configuration based on the ONERA M6 airfoil on drag reduction for different attack angles at Mach 0.84 was performed using analysis of systems Fluent. First, the best values of cant and sweep angles in terms of aerodynamic performance were selected by performing simulations. The analysis included cant angle values of 30°, 40°, 45°, 55°, 60°, 70° and 75°, while for the sweep angles 35°, 45°, 55°, 65° and 75° angles were used. The aerodynamic performance was measured in terms of the obtained lift to drag ratios.

Findings

The results showed that slight alternations in the winglet configuration can improve aerodynamic performance for various attack angles. The best lift to drag ratio for the winglet was achieved at a cant angle of 30° and a sweep angle of 65°, which caused a 5.33% increase in the lift to drag ratio. The toe-out angle winglets as compared to the toe-in angles caused the lift to drag ratio to increase because of more attached flow at its surface. The maximum value of the lift to drag ratio was obtained with a toe-out angle (−5°) at an angle of attack 3° which was 2.53% greater than the zero-toed angle winglet.

Originality/value

This work is relatively unique because the cant, sweep and toe angles were analyzed altogether and led to a significant reduction in drag as compared to wing without winglet. The wing model was compared with the results provided by National Aeronautics and Space Administration so this validated the simulation for different wing-winglet configurations.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine investors’ herd behaviour for various calendar events and size-based stock portfolios in Pakistan. The authors consider three calendar effects, crisis (COVID-19 and financial crisis 2018–19), announcement of political news and popular calendar anomalies (month-of-the-year and day-of-the-week), and investigate the impact of stock size on calendar effect in terms of investors’ herd behaviour.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses non-linear specification to capture herd behaviour using firm-level daily data for 496 stocks listed on Pakistan Stock Exchange over the period 2001–2020.

Findings

The results indicate herd formation during periods of COVID-19, financial crisis, political news announcements and January (month-of-the-year). The authors also observe significant herding for the biggest and smallest size stocks over complete period. However, the authors find more pronounced herding in big stocks during January as compared to the more noticeable herding in small stocks over complete period. The findings suggest that herding in small stocks is not the main cause of January herding and hint on the prevalence of significant institutional herding during January.

Practical implications

The stock prices destabilize because of the mimicking behaviour during crisis periods, days of political announcements and month of January. Implementation of insider trading laws and transparent information environment can help in reducing these effects and increasing market efficiency.

Originality/value

The authors consider the recent COVID period in our analysis. In addition, we provide new evidence on the possible impact of stock size on calendar effect in terms of herd behaviour, which, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, has not yet been documented in literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the tendency that Malaysian consumers will choose the recombinant collagen-like protein (RCLP) from bacteria as an alternative source of collagen in their consumption and the determinants of the consumer acceptance.

Design/methodology/approach

Quantitative approach is adopted in the study. Descriptive analysis and logistic regression are used to analyze primary data collected from a survey.

Findings

The likelihood of consumers choosing RCLP as an alternative source of collagen is higher among elderly and females. The choice is significantly influenced by the idea that the collagen should support maqasid al-syariah, approved by national Islamic body, should clear on the ingredients used and could boost local economic activities in the future.

Research limitations/implications

An ethical halal policy should be outlined as the guiding principles to the potential producers of RCLP.

Originality/value

An alternative source of collagen using bacteria as proposed is not yet being introduced in Malaysian industry, and the analysis on probability that consumers will accept this new sourced collagen product is using primary data from survey.

Abstract

Purpose

Maturity models have been widely adopted as a popular framework for improvement project management practices. Despite their prevalence, there is still minimal evidence that improvements in maturity correspond to improvements in performance or value. This paper aims to explore the challenges faced in applying project management maturity models and offers suggestions for their revision.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper highlights the presumptions in their development and use that are inhibiting relevance of maturity models. Case studies from a major research project explore the relationship between maturity and value. Insights are generated on how project management maturity models need to change in order to become relevant.

Findings

Project management maturity models presume that project management is universal, control oriented and consistent, and that maturity is a linear process. Empirical evidence demonstrates that the practice of project management varies, that different practices result in different value. The paper suggests that a contingent and contextual approach to assessment is required, which maturity models as currently defined may not be able to support.

Research limitations/implications

This is a largely conceptual paper and draws on a limited number of case studies that derived maturity from a comprehensive understanding of project management practices. It is not tied to one specific model, and a model that would address the criticisms discussed here has not been conceived or developed.

Practical implications

This paper will have particular relevance for organizations, who may place excess faith in the rhetoric surrounding maturity models without questioning their underlying relevance or value. It is also of importance to those who develop maturity models and suggests strategies for their significant revision.

Originality/value

This paper takes an important look at whether maturity models actually deliver on their promise and argues that by both design and structure, they are unlikely to do so in their current form.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a method by merging Legendre wavelets method and quasilinearization technique to tackle with the nonlinearity and to get better and more accurate results.

Design/methodology/approach

To test the significance of the proposed scheme, the authors applied the method on the model representing magneto-hydrodynamic squeezing flow of a viscous fluid between two parallel infinite disks, where one disk is impermeable and the other is porous with either suction or injection of the fluid. For the sake of comparison, numerical solution by using RK-4 is also computed. From the graphs and tables, it is evident that the proposed method shows an excellent accordance with the numerical solution.

Findings

The solution converges to the numerical solution when the degree of Legendre polynomials m is increased. For m = 20 in all the three cases, for different values of S, M and A, the graphs of solutions obtained by Legendre wavelet quasilinearization technique show an excellent agreement with numerical solution. Also, it is evident from figures that suction and injection affects the velocity profile in opposite way. For suction, maximum velocity is seen to be at the center of the channel. Magnetic field can be used to regularize the flow and it stabilizes the flow behavior.

Abstract

Purpose

In this current study, the authors aim to analyze non-linear radiative squeezed flow in a rotating frame of viscous fluid.

Design/methodology/approach

The Radioactive nature of the fluid is taken into consideration. The reduced form of equations governing the flow are developed by the implementation of similarity transformations. The coupled system thus obtained is solved by using the homotopy analysis method (HAM).

Findings

Augmentation in velocity and temperature profiles is discussed graphically by varying various involved parameters. The total error of the system is discussed in Table I. The cases of linear radiation and non-linear radiation are also discussed in Tables II and III.

Originality/value

The study presented in this paper is original and it has not been submitted to any other journal for publication purpose. The contents are original and proper references have been provided wherever applicable.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this manuscript is to study the flow of a nanofluid through a porous channel under the influence of a transverse magnetic field. Permeability of the walls is considered to be different, which results in an asymmetric nature of the flow. The height of the channel is variable, and it dilates or squeezes at a uniform rate.

Design/methodology/approach

A numerical solution (Runge–Kutta–Fehlberg) has been obtained after reducing the governing equations to a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations using some suitable similarity transforms, both in time and space.

Findings

An increase in absolute values of the permeability parameter results in an enhanced mass transfer rate at both the walls, while the rate of heat transfer also increases at the lower wall. Few graphs are also dedicated to see the behavior of Nusselt and Sherwood numbers following the variations in flow parameters.

Originality/value

A pictorial description of the flow and effects of emerging parameters on the temperature and nanoparticle concentration profiles is presented to analyze the flow behavior. It is established that the asymmetry of the channel affects the flow quite significantly.
